Cannot download telus emails to iphone 7 since changing telus email password - pop.telus.net June 4

Hi

I recently changed my email password on June 4 and cannot not download my emails to iphone7. Fine prior to doing this.
I did change the password on my phone to the new password.

This is the error that comes up: Cannot GET Mail. The mail server 'pop.telus.net' is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in mail settings.

I contacted TELUS and 2.5 hrs. later I was advised to delete the account and add it back in.

Surely, this isn't an answer. And losing all sent mail and such.

Anyone else have this problem recently?

Hi @JaniceNeedsHelp ,

Happy to hear you were able to resolve the issue your your iPhone Mail app & TELUS email.

Why would my iPhone not let me change my email password?

I'm not sure exactly how to answer this without sounding to technical and assuming different errors you may encounter. There is actually 2 areas on your iPhone where you need to update your password; IMAP/POP (incoming mail), and SMTP (outgoing mail). Failure to update both will result in the error you received.

To keep this as simple and effective as possible you can try following the instructions below after you have changed your TELUS email password.

Update Apple iPhone Mail Settings

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Passwords & Accounts
  3. Select the TELUS email account
  4. Click on Account
  5. Confirm Hostname = imap.telus.net
  6. Confirm Username = [email protected]
  7. Delete old password, enter new password
Take your time typing your password and make sure is typed correctly.
  8. Click SMTP
  9. Click smtp.telus.net
  10. Confirm Host Name = smtp.telus.net
  11. Confirm Username = [email protected]
  12. Delete old password, enter new password
Take your time typing your password and make sure is typed correctly.
  13. Use SSL = ON (Green)
  14. Authentication = Password
  15. Server Port = 1025
  16. Click Done (top right)
  17.  Click < Account on top left.
  18. Click Advanced
  19. Use SSL = ON (Green)
  20. Authentication = Password
  21. Server Port = 993
  22. Click < Account on top left.
  23. Click Done on top right

Your All Done! 🙂

Now its time to test your email to ensure everything is working.

  1. Click Home Button
  2. Click on Mail App
  3. Click < Mailboxes (this may or may not be an option for you)
  4. Click Telus email (this may or may not be an option for you)
  5. Click on new email (box with pencil located on bottom right)
  6. In the To field, enter your own email address.
  7. In subject, enter “Test”
  8. Click Send.
  9. Wait a few minutes to receive the email.

If you received your email with the subject "Test" then you know your email can send & receive emails, and is now correctly configured.

Hopefully this solves the problem you are facing 🙂

OK, so I fixed this problem by putting my password back to the original password and now the iphone7 email downloads.  😛

SO my question now is - why would my iPhone not let me change my email password???

Thank you Brandon, for your help!

I did not have the settings the way you listed out for IMAP. I prefer pop.telus.net. Probably different?

However, I did change my email in the incoming email server but did not in the outgoing as there was not one there in the beginning.

I am glad either way it is fixed as I did not want to delete the account. 🙂

I am keeping your notes for future when I may change to IMAP.

Thank you!

Hi @JaniceNeedsHelp ,

You are so welcome! 🙂

The reason why I included IMAP settings was for a few reasons. I was unable to find any supporting information on official TELUS documentation for setting up POP, so it may or may not have been discontinued. To increase chances of success, and compatibility I offered IMAP. Its also the preference I recommend to customers since it saves space on your device, when upgrading to a new iPhone transferring of emails is easier, and if you have your email on your iPhone, and iPad they share the same emails. If POP works great for you then that's great. It comes down to personal preference.

I'm glad everything is working as it should and you did not have to delete the account and start over. Happy emailing!
