The best protection is to not install software from a source you've never heard of and only use the official app store for the ones you do install. Free apps are rarely truly free, there's always a catch and sometimes that catch is a virus, spyware, adware or ransomware. I only install apps from companies I know. No games and no snake oil utilities promising to make my phone better or faster or more fun.
