Using a MacBook Air as a phone
Evidently there are "apps" that would let me use my MacBook Air to make phone calls. But, the one I briefly tried required settings I do not have. Something referred to as SIM settings. The sample setup box implied a website address and a password. Anyone have info on making this work..3.2KViews0likes2CommentsRe: Spam blitz
I got 15 calls today, from 6 different numbers. All the same, phone rings twice and goes to message. All numbers are “odd” and if one clicks on the number in the message I get “long distance charges may apply”.. So, guessing, this is one of those $30.00 a minute scams to listen to.. nothing, or an add for a back scratcher.8.6KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Spam blitz
I looked into that but as I understand it.. activating it, challenges all calls. I am a volunteer driver for seniors (https://drivehappiness.ca/) and get many calls from seniors that do not need a new level of complexity when they call. If, I could register only some numbers.. and leave the rest it would work, but I don't think it works that way.8.6KViews0likes1CommentSpam blitz
The last few days I have been blitzed with a new (to me) spam process. A call will come in from 904682640684 or 23522367987 and when answered immediately leave a message. Clicking/selecting that message brings up a prompt that the call "may" incur long distant charges. Yesterday I was blessed with 5 calls within 20 min.. a brief interlude and then again.. several times.. Finally turned my phone off. FWIWSolved8.7KViews1like8CommentsHeads up when converting to fibre
I was connected to fibre a few days ago. AND this evidently automatically connects you to voicemail. A fine feature I am sure.. if.. you were told about it and given instructions on how to set it up. So.. because they did not.. I had several important messages go to Telus voicemail.. with no way for me to access same. I get a cryptic message on my phone “Voicemail Msg. Via phone Co”. Get out my phone manual.. determine this is from Telus.. follow prompts.. input password... No password.. STUCK. Phone Telus Support.. Wait thru “we are experiencing..... “ Explain problem.. get minor acknowledgement of my issue.. promise to fix.. NOT.. call back.. Our office is now closed..... Call back again in AM.. Wait.. terrible music likely to ruin day.. Get clear speaking tech.. no problem, can fix, give me a minute to de-activate Voicemail... DONE. Subsequent discussion.. tech acknowledged this is a problem that Telus needs to address with better (any) communication. So.. heads up folk, if you have a perfectly adequate answering machine that you wish to continue using, keeping your messages on “your” device and not in some cloud where it is available to who knows.. Be aware that the default is Telus voicemail.2.5KViews0likes0CommentsConnected to fibre.. not that impressed
So all spring Telus has been digging up the neighbourhood laying pipe for the “fibre”, and I have been eager to try it. So, last week out of the blue we get an email informing us a technician will arrive between 9 and 11 Sept 22. Great, I never officially applied, but OK, I am ready. Then an email outlying COVID-19 protocols.. then the evening of the 21st an automated telephone call informing us that it will be a virtual insulation.. push one to accept. Not that happy with the idea of doing it virtual.. but hey, still eager. So, the technician shows up ~9:10, makes some inquiries about my health and proceeds with the installation.. Seems he did not get the virtual memo.. which was a good thing as there is no way this installation can be done “virtually”. 2 hours later I am on fibre.. woo-how. Checking my speed.. depends on which “checker” you use.. Google Speed test gives me half of what I had (75MBS) download but a full ~80-90 upload. Telus speed test gives me~80-90 on both up and down. Not sure who to believe... but there “seems” little difference in browsing or watching videos.. before or after. I think my TV picture is clearer (OPIK TV) but am now blessed with a Home Screen that gives me a whole pile of channel selections I DON’T want.. And, to boot, my phone will no longer work if there is a power failure.. Impressed with fibre.. NOT.Solved2.8KViews0likes1CommentMoving to fiber
Fiber is coming to my neighborhood as I type 👍. What, if anything can I do in my home to make it easier for when the installer comes? Currently my "Telus" comes into my electrical panel cupboard on a telephone wire. It is converted/split (?) to an ADSL (?) wire that goes to a Telus WiFi T3200m modem, from which patch cables go to a wall terminal (RJ45 connectors) then to my various devices (with CAT5e) terminating again in RJ45 wall outlets. Am I correct in assuming that the fiber modem will have RJ45 outlets How many? Is there an option (or desirable) to go fiber all the way to my devices.. TV.. computer? How big physically is the modem, is there a heat/cooling issue? As in, can I have the fiber modem placed in my electrical service cupboard, if there is room? Thank you for your timeSolved3.9KViews1like2Comments
