WARNING! Phone Upgrade Scam involving fake TELUS Mobility rep

PeterBM
Neighbour

I have recently fallen victim to a sophisticated scam in which someone misrepresenting themself as a TELUS Mobility rep convinced me to "switch" from Koodo (where I am a current subscriber) to TELUS with the offer of discounted service and 2 new phones (Samsung S24). Without doing any other checks, I ordered the phones from Koodo and ended up being convinced they were the wrong model. I "returned" them to an address in Kelowna using a legitimate FedEx shipping label. I am now on the hook for two expensive phones I don't have and now need to see if Koodo will help me out with this. I'm happy to provide detailed information on this to a legitimate TELUS representative. I'm still able to contact the person perpetrating this scam, as he does not know that I know this is a scam.

Start with filing a police report right away.

That's what I did, Nighthawk. However, the police will only let me file a report if I suffer financial loss. Thanks to the fraud management policies of TELUS/Koodo, I won't be charged for any of this. I called today to get everything cancelled, and I'm both relieved and grateful that it is being handled by TELUS staff now.

Also, the EPS advised me to alert the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre before contacting them again. Given that I'm not going to be out of pocket, I doubt the EPS will hear about this directly.

While I'm sad you had to go thru this, I am also glad that you took the time to post what happened to you as I too just received a (it sounds too good to be true) offer from someone claiming to be someone working on behalf of Telus.

They did send me an email with the details of the offer and they were very careful to state that I should only call or reply to the email / phone number they provided.

Needless to say, I won't be returning their cold call.

Thanx again for the heads up PeterBM.  Greatly appreciated.
