Prime Video on TELUS - April 2023

PrimeVideoBlueBG.jpg

April is here already, friends! There's nothing better than kicking back after a great day and checking out that new movie your coworkers keep talking about, or checking out the latest episodes of your favourite series. Prime Video is the place to be for both, and next month brings a slew of great new content to dig into. I can't wait!

As you may know, Prime Video is part of the Optik TV experience, and the Prime Video app is also on the Optik TV 4K media box as well. It's never been easier to sign up! There's always great new original content available, not to mention a ton of classic movies and shows to check out! Let's dive in!

Coming to Prime Video in April

  • April 14 - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Season 5)
    • The final season of the smash comedy drama about the housewife turned stand-up comic.
  • April 28 - Citadel (Season 1)
    • The highly anticipated spy thriller series about two spies who must remember who they really are.

Most Anticipated

Citadel (Season 1)

I cannot wait for this series to drop. When I first heard about the premise of Citadel there's no doubt I was intrigued. The key for me was how well the two leads play off of each other, and what their chemistry would be (a vital piece to any show like this). Judging from the trailer, it looks like Citadel is ready to exceed expectations and then some.

How fun does that look? Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Citadel is the story of two strangers who meet on a train, unable to shake the feeling that they know each other somehow. What they realize is that they're actually former spies from an old defunct agency named 'Citadel', who have had their memories erased (like all other Citadel agents). Now that their enemy, the crime syndicate known as 'Manticore' is back and targeting them in a bid to take over the world, they have to remember their training and find the strength to fight back.

This definitely has some James Bond vibes that I'm looking forward to, with a top notch cast and some beautiful cinematography to boot. You know where I'll be when the first season drops April 28. Check it out!

Top Gun: Maverick

I'm not entirely sure that I need to go too much into detail for Top Gun: Maverick but for those interested or for those who haven't seen the original (you're out there, I know it)...the Academy Award Best Picture nominee is now available on Prime Video and you owe it to yourself to check it out. If you haven't seen the original 1986 classicTop Gun then check that out first. It still holds up remarkably well; there's a reason it's a classic. Now, for those who have...this sequel takes place over 30 years since the original.

More than three decades after graduating from the Top Gun flight program, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell (Cruise) is now a test pilot. Despite his achievements, repeated insubordination has kept him at that rank, whereas he should be an admiral or higher. When he defies orders again during a hypersonic jet test, he's assigned to Top Gun once again...this time as the teacher of a new generation of the world's top recruit pilots. When they're tasked with destroying an unsanctioned uranium plant and getting away before the enemy pilots take them out, Maverick himself realizes he must fly with the team.

If that trailer doesn't give you chills, I can't help ya. I saw this in IMAX and let me tell you, I was first in the 'cautiously skeptical' line walking in. And moving swiftly to the 'I was wrong, that was unbelievable' line immediately following.  When a franchise returns this long after the original, the hardest part is giving the fans enough of a nod to the original to get the nostalgia factor up, while still being a classic action movie that can stand on its own. No mistake about it, Top Gun: Maverick delivers.

The story is great, Cruise knocks it out of the park (few people are doing action like he is these days), the sound demands to be played at the highest level your neighbours will allow, and the cinematography in the fighter jets is unparalleled. Cruise had the young cast take flight school to prep for the movie, and the fact that most of the scenes are shot in real fighter jets is breathtaking. You owe it to yourself to check this out. Don't miss it when it drops on Prime Video March 24!
