Telus sent me to collection agency without contacting me
I received a mail from General Credit Services Inc stated that they have been contracted as the authorized collection agency because I own $1919.58 to TELUS CORPORATION PAYROLL
I do recognize that the account number shown on the mail is indeed the T-ID I was assigned but I have left Telus more than 2 years ago, and not a single word from Telus, all of sudden I was sent to collection for something I never heard of?
I tried to contact Telus to find out what’s going on, but giving that all the number I can find is for customer service and I clearly don’t have any active account so nobody can tell me anything. The nice ladies I had been talking to both assumed this is a scam letter. But given that the T-ID was actually shown on the letter I’m hoping someone from Telus could help me with this please. At least tell me the reason for this not so small amount please. 😭
Thank you very much for your attention to this matter.

TELUS_Supportcsarmstr I just got an email from Christina from HR who confirmed the letter I received was legit. Other than that there was nothing to clarify why I was never contacted regarding the charge before, or even what the charge was for! I mean if the collection agency able to mail me letter why couldn’t Telus did? For 2 years there was no verbal communication, no written communication, just straight to collection agency. And nobody could even tell me what was going on because I’m no longer an active employee. In the bottom of the email there was something useful at least - I got the contact info for the case manager at General Credit Service Inc. So if I need to talk to someone regarding why Telus back stabbing me, don’t even talk to Telus, just talk to a case manager in the collection agency?!?? This is how Telus treating their old employees now?! I feel so betrayed… and disappointed by Telus now… any current Telus employee and for anyone who wants to join Telus in the future need to be aware of this too!

rae0105 thanks for sharing this update. Those are great questions that we may never get answered. You could look into requesting verification of the debt from the collection agency. From what I understand, if you do this in writing (with proof of delivery), the collector is required to suspend further actions until they prove the debt's validity and ownership. If you're in Canada, your provincial government website should have detailed information about what debt collectors can and can't do along with some guidance for initiating disputes. It's unfortunate we need to spend precious time on this, but I'm grateful there's a system in place to dispute claims like these.

Thank you for taking the time to share this and for offering such a clear explanation. It’s really helpful to know that there’s at least a framework in place for people who need to verify or dispute something like this.
I agree — it’s unfortunate that we even have to spend energy on it, but I appreciate your thoughtful response and the reminder that there are official channels to turn to. I hope everyone affected finds a fair and peaceful resolution soon.

TELUS_Support, I'm experiencing the same situation, and I sent a private message with my old TID to the support channel yesterday. Can someone reply to my message to at least acknowledge it was received and start looking into the issue? I resigned from TELUS over 2 years ago and I have no idea why I would owe their payroll department nearly $3,000, especially since the company never contacted me about this after I left. This is a very stressful experience and I would like some guidance on getting it resolved. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi csarmstr and rae0105 - I am trying to get this sorted for you both as the situation does not sit well with me and the team.
I spoke with someone who will be able to help and they asked me to send you a private message to send you in the proper direction and they will assist with sorting this out. You are both welcome to send me a private message to follow-up

El-Eric It’s really comforting to know there are still current TELUS employees willing to help out — thank you for that.
I did reach out to [email protected], and received a response from Christina in P&C / HR confirming that the letter I received was legitimate. However, she explained she couldn’t discuss the matter further since I’m no longer an active employee and directed me to GCS for payment inquiries.
Unfortunately, no one at TELUS has been able to clarify why this amount is owed, what period it covers, or why no contact was made over the past two years before a collection agency became involved.
GCS did provide this statement:
“You were paid from your termination of September 16, 2023 and was paid till September 30, 2023, so you owe TELUS $1,919.58.”
That explanation only raises more questions on my end, as TELUS never reached out directly at the time, and retrieving the relevant bank records is challenging since they’re now beyond my institution’s 18-month statement window.
I’ll keep investigating from my end, but at this stage TELUS Payroll hasn’t offered much assistance. Still, I appreciate your time and willingness to help clarify things.

Hey there, I haven’t heard a single word back from the DM I sent yesterday too. I feel very stressed out by this too… not a single word over 2 years and all of sudden a collection notice show up on our credit report… all those years of hard working and dedication to make the company a better place, this totally feels like a stab on the back… why would they just ruin our credit score like this… I just don’t get it 😭
