How to block Internet for a device?
Hi there,
I have a Telus router and I'd like to block a IOT device to prevent it from accessing the Internet. I’ve tried several options on my computer, and the only one that blocks web browsing and console commands like “ping” is the “Access Scheduling” feature, but that requires leaving access open for at least 15 minutes. Is there a better way to block everything?
What if i schedule Monday: 12:00 to 12:15 and another one Monday: 12:30 to 12:45 does each schedule prevent other to allow internet covering the 24h?
And while testing I notice the time is not Local is it UTC?
Model#: T3200M
Firmware Version: 31.164L.22

Thank you for your response. I installed the Telus Connect app, but it seems to require a Telus customer account. I tried to sign up, but I can't register (no email received, SPAM folder checked). I’m a tenant, and internet access is included in my rent; so I’m not the one paying for the connection, but I manage the router via the address 192.168.1.254. I don’t want to contact the landlord about this, at least not for now.
From the web interface I searched for MAC Filtering but in Advanced Setup > Blocking/Filtering, I have only:
In Firewall:
I think you might have a different version than mine. Any other solution?

Can you tell us more about the use case? Is this device supposed to never get internet, or is it a certain window that it shouldn't have access?

Whenever I buy a device that asks for my Wi-Fi credentials, whether it comes from China or from a company whose privacy policies and reputation I’m unfamiliar with, my first instinct is to block its internet access at the router. However, these devices need to be able to communicate within the local network, which rules out the blacklist you mentioned.

Hi! Zhod0 - I found some info here on this question. Let me know if that helps!
The "Access Scheduling" tool is essentially a user-friendly wrapper for firewall rules. If you want a total, permanent block that doesn't rely on a timer, you have two cleaner options:
The Telus Connect App (Easiest): If you use the Telus Connect app (formerly My Wi-Fi), you can simply find the device in the list and hit the "Pause" button. Unlike the scheduling tool in the web interface, this is an "indefinite pause." It stays blocked until you manually unpause it.
MAC Filtering (The "Hard" Block): In the router's advanced web interface (usually 192.168.1.254), look for MAC Filtering under the Advanced Setup or Security tab.
Set the mode to Blacklist (or "Deny").
Add the MAC address of your IoT device.
This blocks the device at the hardware level from communicating with the router entirely, which is more robust than just a web-access schedule.
