Closed captions come on using browser

Watching TV+ on Mac (macOS 15.4.1) with Safari 18.4.  During live tv or watching recordings, closed captions always comes on, even though it isn't selected.   USUALLY I can toggle closed captions on ...

I'm assuming, then, that I have the legacy system. Is it possible to switch equipment?
