Disabling Apps on Telus Optik

Meld
Neighbour

I have questions:

1. Is there a way to disable apps on Telus Optik?

2. Is there a way to set the box to automatically come onto the guide or last channel without going through the menus or hitting a ton of buttons?

This is for a new box not legacy.

The new system is not user friendly for seniors. I need the box to hide/disable apps and automatically come onto the guide when the unit is powered up

Does a legacy box have this capability? I spoke to one supervisor who said yes this is possible with a legacy box. Can someone confirm this?

Seniors are not the target  audience. As long as the new GEN wants the pictures instead of words this will become the norm. We have to turn on TV and tuner, then click on guide.

I also dislike when streaming shows, start watching something and it will always stay on continue watching even though you never intend on watching to the end.

The new Optik equipment does not have the ability to disable apps (the older equipment could disable YouTube for example), though our dev team is aware of the demand for it and they're looking into it for the future. There's also no capability to have the guide appear on startup, though we can pass that feedback along for sure.

Hi @Meld

1. There is a way to hide apps from the 'Apps' row on home screen. You cannot remove the row entirely, however you can have it display only 1 app; this is a Google requirement as the box runs the Android TV operating system. Pressing and holding the OK button on your remote when the app is highlighted/in focus will bring up options to remove from favourites/move/uninstall where possible. Other than YouTube, most apps will require a login, so launching them will just open the login screen. Simply pressing 'back' or 'home' will return you to the home page.

2.The last channel played does start automatically, albeit in the background behind the Home screen overlay. One press of the Home button or the Back button will hide the Home screen overlay. Similarly, one press of the Guide button will open the guide. No need to go through menus or hitting a ton of buttons.

The legacy boxes do have the capability to hide the Home screen, but they are being discontinued, so it may not be worth the effort to switch only to have to switch back.
