I recently had my iphone unlocked by Telus, and wondered if I can update my phone now? I have heard that I will have to get it unlocked each time I run updates which seems expensive?

If the phone was unlocked through Telus then you are absolutely fine to upgrade the device. It's the 3rd party unlocks you have to worry about.
