Remote access for SSD hard drive plugged into Telus modem (like a NAS)

I've moved countries and couldn't bring my 4 bay Synology with me. I didn't think to set it up at my parents' house so I could access it remotely, which I'll do when I next go back home for a visit, but that won't be for at least another 6 months.

In the mean time, I've connected an SSD to my modem via USB (Telus NH20A modem, using Telus PureFibre gigabit), and can connect to it for wirelessly whilst I’m at home and connected to the WiFi. It essentially works as a NAS whilst I'm at home on the network.

However, I'd like to access this remotely from outside my house/WiFi network. How do I do this? Is it a case of port forwarding? How do I assign it an address that I can access from somewhere else? Would be really grateful for some advice.

If it has an ethernet port, id recommend using the wired over wireless connection, as for connecting to it, I'd use my own private VPN, so that everything is encrypted, there's many guides on how to do it on the web
