I have the Telus SmartHub inside my house and it connects to an antenna outside (ODU) my house using an EtherNet connection, by which the antenna also gets its power. The antenna connects to a tower about two kilometers away. My Telus subscription service is for 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload. I understand I will not reach those levels, but can expect to get close without undue external factors influencing the environment.
Not uncommonly (several times a day, if I check it that often) my data throughput drops. If I restart the antenna only (not restart the indoor SmartHub), the throughput increases. The chart above is an example of what I regularly find. In the above case I have restarted the antenna unit immediately after the 6:03 AM speedtest (using telus.com/speedtest).
Telus Technical Support (Tier Two) has told me outside influences are likely causing the low throughput (such as local pirating or interference with the frequency or perhaps rain or something unknown). I think this is not likely, as the throughput gets back toward normal immediately after restarting the antenna.
Why does my throughput commonly drop and why is it necessary to report the antenna in order to restore to something similar to the expected (subscribed) throughput.
Thank you.
