data plans

We have 3 cell phones on our account. My husband and I have data included on our plan, but not for our son. He can snap-chat, Instagram, etc on wifi, but can't text pics or video by messaging/text. Is that right?

Call Telus to see if a data block can be placed on your son's account to allow Multi-media Messaging without being charged for pay-per-use data. That should allow messaging without data costs.

Hi, @NFtoBC is correct. However, removing the data block can be tricky without having a data plan. You can incur data charges when leaving the wi-fi area if you hit the web button or leave an application running in the background, . Pay per use data charges can be really expensive.

Bit of misinformation in here, once you have a data block, you can no longer send MMS (picture, audio or video messages). If your son simply does not have a data package but does have messaging in their plan (or as an add-on), they will be able to send MMS without charge domestically.

@tsizzle

  Wouldn't that still subject the user to 'leakage' and having to pay for other data used during the times data is on? This is a big issue for users on the Koodo boards, and frequently discussed.

In other words, as @NFtoBC says, Having data activated without having a data plan can be hazardous. #AtYourOwnRisks

This is the exact situation I have with my daughter's phone. Her data is not blocked because she needs to send/receive MMS messages. She is usually good about turning data off on her phone and switches it on only as needed for the MMS. Once in a while she forgets to turn it off and I'll see a few dollars racked up in per use data charges.

It would be nice if TELUS could block data using a dollar limit set on the account for pay per use data. That way I could set it for zero or $1 and she wouldn't have to manage the data setting on her phone to use MMS.

@xray This is a pretty cool idea. You should make it a suggestion in the Idea section.
