What is the process of porting/transferring from a competitor for a new activation?

I'd like to bring over a phone number from a competitor and I'd be a new telus client purchasing the phone/plan on their website. Will my existing phone no longer work during this period or will the number not be ported until the phone is delivered to me?

There is a description here for prepaid. I expect the post-paid process to parallel the prepaid steps. Why not call & find out. There are occasionally discounts or promotions to transfer your number.
