Mobility Discount Scam??

Masocata
Neighbour

Has anyone else received a call from "they say Telus" offering a 30% discount on your telus mobility bills?  The gentleman knew my two account numbers and that I had other services with Telus but he kept asking for my personal pin and I was not comfortable providing it.  When I told him I didn't feel comfortable and that I would need to call Telus to confirm before I did anything he got a bit defensive and asked me,"well if I wasn't from Telus, how would I know what services you have and your account numbers..."  that made me feel even more uncomfortable so I hung up.  So just wondering if this was a scam or not.  And if it is a scam, how do they have all of the information that they have??

The call you received appears to be a scam. Telus will never ask for your personal PIN or sensitive information in this manner. We also want to reassure you of the following:

  • Telus representatives will always call from an identifiable 1-800 number, and the Caller ID will show as "Telus."
  • While we may reference account details during legitimate calls, we will never pressure you for sensitive information such as your personal PIN.
  • Any representative acting defensively or attempting to intimidate you is not following Telus protocols and is likely not genuine.

Regarding your concern about how they may have obtained your account information, it's possible this information was compromised through external means. Unfortunately, scammers can sometimes gather personal details through phishing, data breaches, or other fraudulent activities unrelated to Telus systems.

To protect yourself further:

  1. Do Not Share Information: Never provide your PIN, passwords, or sensitive details to unsolicited callers.
  2. Report the Scam: https://www.telus.com/en/about/security/phishing-spam
  3. Change Your PIN: For added security, consider updating your Telus account PIN as a precaution.
