With my current contract with Telus ending early next year, I recently purchased the nano-SIM card and an unlocked iphone 6. Do I have to wait until my contract ends to call Telus to activate my new iphone and plug the SIM card in? or can I do it now? Thanks in advance!

You can change your phone and SIM information in the 'MY Account' section on Telus.com. If I recall, it was as simple as choosing the upgrade or the replace option, and enter the number of the new SIM. It took about 15 minutes for the phone to fully connect to the network.

Also, don't forget to back up you old phone so you can retrieve your contacts, etc.

Enjoy your new phone!

From what I undestabilize you can swap phone anytime you want I have swapped mine a couple times mid contract, just can't get a new discounted phone until end of contract unless you buy out but if you already own the new phone shouled be no issue

You can activate that nano-SIM now... I recently did this recently too with the Blackberry Passport.

Contracts only obligate you to pay the bill for the duration of the contract. Which phone you use is irrelevant to the contract.
