iMessage feature not working

I wondered if anyone could tell me my locked to Telus iPhone 4 iMessage feature isn't working? I got the phone last week, used.  Although it is not hooked up to a plan right now when I got it last week I could send and receive iMessage to other iPhone & iPod users when in a wireless zone.  I can no longer do this.  Weird...

Clarification:  You have an iPhone, but no data plan. The phone will not send iMessages when away from WiFi.

What colour arethe text Bubbles?

The iPhone should not be able to send iMessages unless connected to either a data plan or WiFi. You may have been using Pay-per-use data previously - did you turn Data off on your phone?
