Typically Nikon or Canon. Usually their DSLRs are best though a very small number of their point and shoots may create decent photos.

If you mean a phone that gives you marginally decent photos? You will have to decide what you plan to shoot and what you plan to do with the photos. Higher megapixel count is not always the key.

The camera / phone doesn't matter for the following uses:

  • Post them on Instagram or the wholesaler of your privacy, Facebook
  • View photos on phone only
  • Take photos in bright light

Camera will definitely matter for the following:

  • View photos on a large screen (PC/TV) or post high res images without the heavy noise
  • You plan to print them
  • Take photos in dimmer light, at dusk or at night  <<  most cell phones can't do a decent job with this
  • Zoom in on things (digital zoom is horrible)

Most cell phone manufacturers like to make claims of how good their photo or video quality is just to sell you the phone. I'd go online and start reading reviews before settling on a phone to use as a camera.

I guess that depends on user preference, the higher end devices typically have better sensors/lenses. But there are also phones with various features such as "slow motion", "time lapse", "best photo", sphere photo, mega-pixels and so on. Were there any particular features you were looking for in a camera?

I agree.... if that picture is important.  I reach for my Nikon DSLR.

I got tired of arguing with tourists who show me their images on their oversized screens.  Load the images onto a computer and you can see phones often apply too much compression.
