Plain text messaging converted to MMS - why?

Why do some of my text messages turn into MMS (multimedia) and some stay as plain text? The ones that are sent as MMS are just plain text.
At 1st thought it was the length of my messages which I have read anything over 160 characters automatically converted to MMS however I have a few text messages o have sent are like 350 characters and are sent as plain  text message and are not converted - so I am very confused as would like all my "text" messages sent as plain text messages not converted to MMS is there a way to do this??

Hello David007,

There are a few reasons why a text message would get converted to what is called "Text as MMS":

1. The message is super long and your device decides to use MMS as the transport instead of SMS

2. You are sending text message with emoticons / emojis

3. You are sending a text to multiple people at the same time (Group Messaging)

The conversion usually depends on the device that you are using and can vary from device to device. I hope this helps.

It may also depend on the recipient carrier or device. Some messages may simply be split, then reassembled by the phone at the other end. Some may be assembled as an MMS and sent as a whole message. I remember in days of yore getting long messages out of order, and having to figure out which order to align them.  MMS prevents such gaffes.

I don't believe you have any control over the way the message is handled, unless you want to send your messages in little packets of less than 140 characters.

Lol. Those days made parental freaking out a lot harder, when messages came in like:

(2) up a tree

(3) we named him Cheeko

(1) we found a bear cub

With nowadays texting technology I can freakout in proper time and order.
