Issues with S3 Update to KitKat

I have recently updated my Galaxy S3 to KitKit and since then I have had issues with all google related products and noticifications plus WhatsApp. With Gmail, Hangouts and WhatsApp I don't receive any notifications unless I open up the app and refresh it. Very frustrating. I have to tried to reinstall all apps but this doesn't seem to help.  I have checked that Autosync is checked. Any suggestions? Thank you!

You also want to check the settings on any data saving apps (juice defender / greenify etc). Some of these apps will hibernate the process preventing the connection that brings in the notifications.
