I just learned Telus is migrating webmail to Gmail!

I suspect this is related to email issues Telus had in August but that's speculation on my part. I was trying to modify my Junk mail settings for Webmail and can't seem to find the settings to change it. In the process I discovered this:

Webmail to Gmail migration: What you need to know Starting March 2020, we will begin migrating all TELUS Webmail accounts to Gmail, the Google email platform

If this was publicized I seem to have missed it. More information here:

https://www.telus.com/en/bc/support/article/telus-email-transition-general-information

Here's hoping this transition goes smoothly. I'm curious what the privacy implications are as that's why I've stayed away from Gmail.

Just a long time customer hoping to help.

I'm just venting my frustration about Telus moving to Gmail.  I've been using Outlook for email almost since it first became available.  Although I'm an Apple user, I find Outlook has the best features for email.  Almost all the formatting options that are available in Word are available in Outlook.  Gmail on the other hand has Bold, Underline and Italic.  Gmail will randomly invert your photos if you want to insert one into the body of the text.  All you can do with the photo is size it by pulling on the corners.  Bullets are available but you can't change their format.  Etc., etc.  This form to submit a question has more and better features than Gmail does.

It's free so I suppose you get what you pay for.  Eventually, I suspect Gmail will contact all of us who migrated from Telus asking if we'd like to upgrade for a small monthly subscription.  I do wish that Telus would supply detailed information on how to enable the Outlook settings to continue receiving email via that app instead of Gmail.  I'm not expecting that information because the whole point is they want their clients to migrate to Gmail and to save costs by not having to support any software.  With Gmail they achieve that.  I've been a customer since 1978 and I chose to stay in large part because of Outlook.  I consider this switch a downgrade in service.  😔  If I sound cynical, I guess that's what I've become.

I Googled "How to configure Outlook for GMail" and the Microsoft instructions are the first result.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/add-a-gmail-account-to-outlook-70191667-9c52-4581-990e-e3...

The Google instructions are the second result.

I strongly suspect the move to GMail was for reliability not cost. There was a Telus email outage last year that resulted in a lot of problems. It was widely reported by the media that the cause of the issue was human error by the contractor in charge of managing the email system.

Landlines are archaic, tv channels are fast becoming as readily available via the internet as from the traditional providers, it won't be long before Telus's sole product is bandwidth. At least they should have no problems managing that since they and the other 4 TSPs own 85% of the market and the CRTC's efforts to introduce some measure of accountability into the telecom market have been stillborn.
Your cynicism is widely-shared.

Transition is disgusting.  Mail different on iPad and computer, not consistent.  Once you put an article in a folder it doesn’t take it out of the inbox and when you delete it is deletes the folder.  During the transition I lost all my passwords and folders and this was to be an easy migration.  Never seen such a horrible transition.  They did the transition before they knew what they were doing.   I have spent 6 hrs with a Telus tech and Apple and have gotten nowhere.  Telus tech are clueless.  I have several friends who are experiencing the same issues.    Before the transition iPad emails and computer emails were the same, I could use either but now now.   I cannot sign out of the emails and the tech said that is how it will be which is unacceptable.

to the point of switching to a different provider.

It is crap, such a mess

Well after spending 4 plus hours with a so called technician in the Philippines re the migration of Telus email I can thank my son.  My son is not an IT Specialist but he got everything working in less than hour.  He was shocked at what Telus had done, I lost all my contacts, had 2 places to open mail and he sorted it all out for me.  I also did not receive all my emails and mail  on iPad and laptop were totally different.  Thanks to my son everything is up and running.  Telus owe him and I for the frustration and stress they put me through.  Suggest Telus train their people before they start helping the public.  This is so wrong.

I'm extremely frustrated and disappointed by this. The whole reason I setup Telus webmail was to avoid using Google and now they're forcing me back in. I just signed a two-year deal for internet too and this to me should make that void. They're swapping out a product we pay for and adding something that's freely available online.

Guess I have to shop around for a new paid email service somewhere and migrate all my things again. What a pain. This is the kind of thing that will make me strongly consider moving to Shaw for my services especially now that they offer cheap cellphones to go with internet plans. Way to go, Telus

Telus is including the commercial version of Google’s email: G-Suite. You can check the differences between G-Suite and the free product at Google.

Do you know if we get access to the other G Suite apps like Calendar and Contacts, or just the Gmail part? I never considered this and just downloaded the free versions of Calendar and Contacts.

Click on the square of nine dots at top right of your screen. Calendar and Contacts s/b there.

Yes, I generally do not use the browser based Gmail on my PC, but when I do, that is what I use. I guess my real question is whether or not the G Suite version of Calendar and Contacts is different than the free version. On my iPhone, I just downloaded the free Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts. I do sign in with my G Suite account though.

I understood Telus was to migrate Contacts (don’t know about calendaring) from the previous platform to the G-Suite platform, so I suspect you should have access, but have no confirmation.

To my knowledge I had no "Contacts" or "Calendar" in the Telus Webmail to migrate. I did not even know it had that capability.

The transfer does not go smooth as found out. First time going through it wanted me to change to a password i have never used on any other site and i didnt want to change my password. So i tried going through the steps again to see if there was a step i missed and could by pass that. But to no avail i end up at the same thing so i picked a different variant of my password and it doesnt accept it. i try starting from the beginning again and same results. try again. im locked out with too many attempts. i start a live chat with a telus person which im 6th in line. finally gets to me and they shut down the chat. i try to start a new chat and its past there hours of operation. So next day after work i start a live chat and get someone and after a hour they finally get new password set for me but not before having to connect to my computer to see why the webpage they gave me kept wanting to merge my telus account with another google account. he get me into my webmail account through a private session on my browser. So i say goodnight as my email seems to work. i spent the next hour trying to connect my cell phone and my pc email to the account. Cell phone had some looking up to do and the pc email seemed to accept the account but NEVER sync'ed. i still had the webmail open and decided to do some clean up of old emails and then i got shut out of the webmail. it was late so i went to bed. The next morning i try to connect again and it says i violated the policy. i didnt know deleting old emails and emails i dont want is violating the policy.

For anyone that wanted a gmail they can get that easy enough but this whole transfer is a load of garbage and they should keep their own servers

I had no idea!! I've not heard anything about this until a minute ago when I read this. Have they been letting us know? Did I miss some emails? I've been having issues and daily errors with Telus email since the huge mess up last August. I've complained several times but it STILL has not been resolved!! It's been over a year!!

@amam  Like every one else. They will let you know when. I had a lot of trouble in the migration. If you have a lot of emails you need to use save them somewhere. Some people have lost all contacts and also the emails. It took 6 hours on the phone to change 3 devices of mine. I lost my emails but contacts came through ' I printed some important emails and also my contacts There seems to be a lot of trouble with outlook express. Ploecat

Has anyone noticed messages showing up in their inbox about some kind of scam/virus document link sent to some people? For the past two nights it has done this my PC is off and nothing shows sent on my phone?

I just checked Google and these scam messages are showing up in Sent items like 3 and 5am.

If these emails are showing up in your personal sent mail folder, then your computer or phone must have a virus. More likely the PC. Perhaps do a virus scan.

If you are receiving spam emails to your inbox you should drag them to the Spam folder. At least in theory, Google will add them to their spam filter list.

Happily, I'm not receiving spam in my inbox, but a couple of days every week I get a torrent of emails in my junk mailbox, sometimes five or six from a single source and dozens from others. Prior to this migration I'd never get more than one or two per day. Not a huge problem, but annoying and I'm curious as to why it's suddenly happening.
