The primary differences between 2.4 and 5 Ghz is that 2.4 has slower speeds but greater range while 5 has higher speeds and lesser range.

I have the same problem with my plaster and lathe walls in my old (1940's) house as they contain a wire mesh that might block some of the signal. I don't know why it would be different with your old Shaw connection. It might be worthwhile to try other channels in the admin page of the Telus Boost WiFi device.
