Customer Service above and beyond

I stupidly became another victim of the "free mobile phone" scam. I immediately contacted the scammers (I did not know it was a scam) telling them to cancel the "free" phone. After much protest, the lady said she would and sent an email confirming cancellation...

Not trusting that she had actually cancelled it I reached out to "real" Telus through Loyalty program (I think), because scammer said I would get big discount and free phone for my loyalty.

Long story short, this is when I found out it was a scam. The agent, I believe his name is Brandon, explained everything to me about what had happened. Because it was within minutes of my finalizing the transaction/activation involved in the scam, he attempted  (and ultimately was able) to reverse the iPhone upgrade and refund me the activation charges.

Telus was under no legal obligation to help me out of this mess and I wanted to thank Brandon for his patience and for his great customer service. I have now read the Telus Community comments on this scam and various incarnations of similar scams...feel very silly to have fallen for it and will definitely be more suspicious in future.

Thanks for sharing your experience elwatso47 and please do not feel guilty.  These fraudulent networks use highly sophisticated scripts, spoofed caller IDs, and advanced social engineering tactics specifically designed to mimic real loyalty programs. They catch people during busy moments when their guard is down. It has happened to thousands of tech-savvy Canadians so you're absolutely not alone.

By sharing your story so openly, you are actually helping protect the next person who browses this forum. That is exactly what the TELUS Neighbourhood is all about!
