Just Moved In
Hi, my husband has a phone bill and my phone is under his name. I would like to get my own bill under my name. How do I go about doing so? Thanks.

Hi @Nicole32 ,

Although this may seem like a simple name change, the process is a bit more complicated but don't worry, its still possible. The reason being is your husband is the account owner, and his name is attached to the credit check which was done when the account was created. To change this name, we will need to create a new account under your name, complete a credit check, and transfer the number away from the account under his name. We call this process a Transfer of Ownership.

Here is the typical process:

  1. We speak to your husband ask security questions, then get verbal consent that you wish to transfer your number away from his account.
  2. Next we speak with the customer associated with the phone number looking to transfer which is yourself.
  3. We create a brand new TELUS account under your name, and complete a new credit check.
  4. Lastly we transfer your number from your husbands account over to your own account. This results in a $35 transfer fee/line, and you are now the responsible and remaining contracts on your line.

Things to consider:

  • If you wait until your phone is off contract, then complete the Transfer of Ownership, and renew with a new phone, the $35 transfer fee is waived.

  •  When creating a new account, the tenure of the account is reset to 1 day, whereas your husband will the tenure on his account (if their is remaining lines active on it)

  • Plan costs may increase by $5-$15. If your husband has multiple phone numbers under his account, and one leaves, this may adjust the pricing of your plans since there is less family discounts applied.

    • Example #1: if the phones are on Peace Of Mind, or Simple Share plans, there are 2 lines on the account, and one leaves, the $5 discount/line gets removed.
    • Example #2: If there were 4 lines on the account, and one leaves, the remaining 3 lines loose their $15 discount/line, and in replacement receive $10/line. The 4th line that left the account will increase by $15.
