Wondering if getting an unlisted phone number will cut out all those spam calls from the US...
we are on the National Do Not Call List in Canada, but the calls from American numbers and "unknown"s are increasing.

You can't block numbers from calling you unfortunately. Worst case, TELUS can change your number for free.

oh ok, just that the person who replyed above me suggested doing that, so I thought maybe there was a way to do it...

Oops.... I have unlisted numbers blocked on my landline. Have not researched on how to do this on my mobile. I recommend phoning Telus Mobility to see if they can assist.

Being on the National Do Not Call List is a great start.
However one also has to be very vigilant with their number. Do not enter your number into websites asking for your information. Perhaps you have seen sites that will offer to check your IQ, joke of the day, horoscope, etc.
Many of these sites will collect personal information to use for nefarious activities.

Some of those calls come from Autodialers in Mexico, I've discovered, so unfortunately there will always be a few that slip through. It's very frustrating.

I think everyone in this chain is pointing you in the right direction. I have an unlisted number at home and definitely receive far fewer nuisance calls than friends and family who list their number. As mentioned, it's not fool-proof, but it definitely makes a noticeable difference. I think the main time you'll notice it is around election time as election-related calls are exempt from the Do Not Call List. While my friends with listed numbers were getting inundated with calls from candidates, parties and pollsters, I received not a single call during the last federal or provincial election

It helps a little, but they will find you.
Avoiding contest entry forms makes a huge difference. Also setting up your phone to not receive unlisted numbers helps too.
