I have unlimited messaging can I text the us for free or will this cost me. We're talking york region in the gta to New Jersey

Depends on your plan....  Otherwise consider BBM where it is FREE.

Or if both you & your contact(s) have iPhones, iMessage would not have any additional charges as it would be included in your regular data bucket.

Hi, xl and NFtoBC are correct ! Regular text messages do not include texting to the US. You can add one of these 2 plans to cover these. International Text messaging add-ons
