In addition to disablling roaming... check your phone has "manual" carrier selection. This is handy when you only want one carrier and not another.

getting US network or what we call roaming network even without going out of Canada normally happens if we are close to US border. providers like telus can not control such network issue like that because of the high technology towers and phones being manufactured. if you are frequently getting US network, you have to call telus so they can keep track of it.: 1866-558-2273

Indeed, selecting carrier manually on Telus should prevent your phone from connecting onto US roaming towers.
