Clearing the cache is app dependant, but this procedure is for RAM management, a similar concept:
Hold down the home button and swipe away all of the recent apps listed there, or hit the garbage can symbol for an immediate clear all. Now hold down the home button again and select "Task Manager" if you're running Android 4.0. If you're on 4.1, hit the pie graph button. Go to the RAM tab and select "clear memory". This will remove recently opened applications from memory so your phone will run better/smoother until it fills up again.
Now if you want to clear the cache, that is dependant on applications themselves.
Settings > Apps > Pick an app and look at the section that says "Cache". There is a clearing option there.

You could install applications from playstore that clears cache. (There are also lots of apps which has this function as well as many other functions. All in one android toolbox is one example.)
