Agreed.....  however....

  • some applications may use a little bit of cellular data to initialize prior to using wifi.  This may be a concern if you are roaming.  Turn off the cellular data or remove the SIM card to identify these apps.
  • be aware that public open wifi (hotels? restaurants?) are unsecured and there will be data eavesdropping by anyone else using the wifi.  Consider a VPN to encrypt your userid/passwords and activity.
  • if you are travelling, consider a travel pass or having your phone unlocked for an alternative SIM card depending on where you going.

With the cost of national data falling so low and being able to use non-roaming SIM's.... I've given up on public wifi for security and embrace the convenience where I can be anywhere and still have data.

You can confirm your data activity by signing onto your Telus Mobility account and look at your usage activities.  It will show the amount and time when the data was consumed.

No. However, some WiFi locations may charge for access, but you would be aware of this when you subscribed to the local WiFi service, and you would have to create a login at some point.
