Unlock an iphone 5 that used to be with telus

so basically my friend gave me his iphone 5 that used to be with telus since he upgraded, but now i wanna use it with another carrier. I know your supposed to call telus and its $35 but thats for customers who are still with telus. Ièm not with telus but the phone is. What can I do to unlock it? is it the same?

Call them and find out. They don't bite 😉

If you don't have active service with Telus, they won't unlock it. Currently no way around it that I've seen or heard of.
