I wouldn't worry about the manufacturer. Odds are the NSA has their fingers in EVERY one of them. If they don't, one of the foreign intelligence agencies (ie GCHQ) does. If the article is correct (never heard of the site so I don't know how trustworthy it is), 450 mobile carriers would cover pretty much most of the planet. Odds are Canada will be included if all the American carriers are already affected.
Someone has to have the base decryption keys at the cell phone manufacturers also to allow the SIM cards to be read by the phones.

The manufacturer that was hacked (Gemalto) has a press release on their web site saying that they are looking into it, so it seems to be trustworthy.

Yes I read that on the Gemalto site as well. Good to know it was only affecting 2G network sims so TELUS sims would not have been vulnerable.

In the case of an eventual key theft, the intelligence services would only be able to spy on communications on second generation 2G mobile networks. 3G and 4G networks are not vulnerable to this type of attack
