Sounds like an issue with the proximity sensor that automatically blanks out the keyboard when you hold it up to your ear so you don't face dial. The sensor is near the speaker. If you have debris on it or if it's faulty it then it may behave strangely. Turn off the feature in call settings to see if it stops the symptoms.
