I have to upgrade on Telus to a 4G phone from a basic pay and talk. They have no basic text phones that are real user friendly. Can you use any 4G unlocked smartphones just for ease of use for texting or am I restricted to what Telus has for pay and talk?(Never used for surfing or data use.)Thanks.

If you get a plan without a data segment, you may wish to have a data block applied for $2 / month. I'd consider this a safety feature beyond simply turning data off on your phone, as it will ensure your phone does not consume any pay-per-use data while away from Wi-Fi networks, yet still allow sending picture messages.

Here is what we did for my spouse, who needs relatively little mobile communications:

- Pre-owned iPhone 5S (actually a hand-me-down)

- Purchased $10 for 100MB data add-on which nets a savings on minutes. Automatically renews each month.

- Purchased  monthly automatic $10 top-up by credit card.

- Purchased $25 top-up and repeat as minutes are consumed; maybe twice per year.

This nets the calling and data needed, for about $150 annually, however the better deal if you  want just minutes and texts in small quantities is to buy an annual top-up for $100, and replenish it each year. Your excess minutes will carry over. Just make sure to add an automatic top-up option or a calendar reminder so you don't miss the anniversary. equals about $8.50 / month.

You can purchase any phone Telus offers and use it for prepaid. You can also bring your unlocked phone, provided it operates on the correct frequencies, to Telus prepaid.

I was wondering about that myself.  I would love to upgrade to a Samsung Edge but they force you to put a data plan on, problem is I barely use the phone as is and the only thing I would consider is putting on a long distance package nationwide minutes as I travel outside my city as I have family in in other parts of Canada.

If you go here http://www.telus.com/en/on/mobility/plans/telus-voice-35/?INTCMP=Beta_PlansCatalog_CardCTATelusVoice... it has a list of phones where you don't need a data plan with.

There are quite a few friendly Smart Phones listed and some preowned IS6s as well.

Hope this helps.
