I currently have PureFibre service in BC. The fibre terminates into an ONT, which plugs into the SFP port of a T3200M modem. Then I have an ethernet connection from the modem to the router.
I have my eyes on an Asus RT-BE88U because it has an SFP+ port and faster wifi than my currenter wifi router. Could I simply remove the modem from the equation? And then plug the ONT into the SFP+ port an Asus RT-BE88U? Are there other things to consider? I want to eliminate any hardware if possible.
btw, still learning the terminology. So please correct me if I got anything wrong.
Thanks,

When it comes to using the Asus directly with our ONT, it might not be a straightforward plug-and-play scenario. The T3200M handles important settings and configurations specific to our internet services that other routers may not support directly. You could always look into setting your T3200M to bridge mode to see if that works.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've had the T3200M bridged for several years, working with an older model of Asus router.
Can you share details about the important settings and configurations on the T3200M related to the ONT? I want to remove the modem from my setup, and a router with an SFP(+) port seems to accomplish that as long as it can be configured to handle the ONT correctly.
Thank you,

If you have the SFP plugged directly into the T3200, then you do NOT have an ONT. All the ONT does is take the fibre / SFP+ and convert it to ethernet. The ethernet would then be connected from the ONT to the WAN/Internet port on the back of the T3200. If you actually had an ONT, all you'd need to do is connect the ethernet from it directly to your Asus router. You wouldn't need one with a SFP port in that instance.
One thing to realize is that if you are using a third party router with the SFP connected directly to it, Telus won't be able to troubleshoot issues that you may encounter. Any issues that arise from a third party router could result in a service charge for a tech coming out if the issue is determined to be with your equipment.
ONTs look like this:

Thanks for correcting me. I definately do not have an ONT 🙂
I was confusing ONT with what I think is an sfp optical module.
My setup:
wall -> fibre cable -> sfp optical module -> T3200M -> ethernet to old asus router
Could I simply take the T3200M out of the chain of devices and just plug the sfp optical module into a (new) router with an sfp port?
