Issues with IP addresses not being assigned

I am having issues with IP addresses not being assigned when I have a switch plugged in at a specific outlet. The issue doesn't occur right away, the network will be fine for a day or two, sometimes weeks but eventually the network will stop assigning IP addresses and all devices that are connected via WiFi (sometimes hard-wired devices as well) will not have internet. I've tried swapping to another switch (same model) that I purchased to test if the previous one was faulty at that outlet but the problem persists.

When the issue first started occurring, I called Telus support and we were able to identify which device was causing the problem but could not come up with a solution or identify why it is happening. They've only suggested to stop using a switch there however I have a few devices (TV, Xbox, Nintendo) at that location (First floor, main TV area) that I would like to connect via hard-wire.

The switch in question is this one: https://www.amazon.ca/TP-Link-TL-SG105-1000Mbps-Desktop-Gigabit/dp/B00A128S24?th=1

My current network set up is here: https://imgur.com/a/QPuxwLK

My house is wired with fibre and I use a 16 port switch plugged in at the modem in the garage which connects to all the outlets in the house.

This is the 16 port switch that I am currently using: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00PVE7MY2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s02?ie=UTF8&th=1

This is my Telus modem: https://imgur.com/a/NFM8kYj
and this is my Telus wireless AP by the main TV: https://imgur.com/a/fygaOK3

In case it may help, this is the wireless AP on the second floor: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01LFSDZCU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Right now the living room outlet is plugged into my land line and wireless AP but I would prefer it if I could have my TV hard-wired as I like to stream 4K content.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hey @NFtoBC and @Nighthawk is this something you'd possibly have insight into?

My guess is damage to the Ethernet cable between the 16 port switch and the problem outlet.

I’d suggest some further troubleshooting:

  • try different port on 16 port switch
  • test the connected devices elsewhere
  • consider running a temporary ethernet patch cable between the two points to see if the existing cable is the problem.

I've tried troubleshooting the outlet however it doesn't look like it is the outlet or cables. The network is fine if I remove the switch at the outlet and just have the Telus wireless AP plugged into the outlet. The problem only occurs when I have the switch plugged into the outlet and the Telus AP plugged into the switch. Perhaps the Telus modem stops assigning IP addresses after a certain amount of devices are connected to the network?

Update: My wife said she was controlling the internet access thru the telus app on her phone and that was the root cause.

I have had the similar problem after switched to Telus pure fiber.

I have a network switch connects to the optic modem. Replaced the switch but the issue still persist.

The only solution I have found is to factory reset the optic modem. But it will only last for 2 - 7 days then the issue will come back again.

Sad.

I have had this similar issue or problem.

I have few switches and a router connects to the fibre optic modem.

You want to make sure no redundant links or, paths or loopback  of your network, ethernet or  network cables connecting ports on your switches, router or fibre optic to cause a loopback.

you want to press the reboot button on your network access hun or fibre optic modem  or press the reset button which will factory reset all your settings configured back to factory default settings.

On the t3200 modem , the only option is to press the reset button.

So far the only solution I've found is to hard reset the modem but the problem will come back within a week or two.

Broken network cable or loose connection of ethernet cable rj-45 jack or connector  connecting the port on the switch router or modem may have become loose.

I have the exact same problem (with the exact same switch).

The only difference is that the switch was working perfectly for 18 months with no issues.

Then out of nowhere, it stopped working.

I tried replacing the switch with a new one (same model) and replacing all of the cables with new cables.

I then tried to directly connect the cable to my TV just to confirm it was working (it is).

So the issue is that the switch isn't assigning IP's anymore after 18 months.

Did you end up finding a solution?

Sorry, no solution yet!

The device that assigns IPs would be the Telus modem so I am assuming it stops assigning IPs after a certain amount of devices are connected to the network. I will have to troubleshoot some more but let me know if you figure anything out. I may have to go into the Telus modem settings to poke around.
