Weird Telus call

I had a Telus "Agent" call me to try to get me to renew my services. They had all my details without me saying a single thing about myself.

I mentioned I was not looking to change anything at the moment, but I did bring up that my security Display device was flickering and causing issues. The Lady with an indian accent said she would call me back shortly and connect me with a technician.

Sure enough, a short bit goes by, and she calls me and connects me to him. Again, providing no information, they schedule a time for the technician to come by and help me out. He said I could call back at this number; the number was 778-717-2426, which is a weird number... So I called Telus directly and asked them if I have a scheduled day for a technician. They say no...

I tried calling the 778 number back but no answer.

Again, super weird... as I didn't provide any information. Was there a Telus data leak that we aren't aware of? How did they have all my information? Was this a contractor for Telus?

  • I am sure your tech can remove my post marked as solution to show what I mean.

For the OP and others I will repeat what I have posted, never agree to any offer made to you from an unsolicited phone call. NEVER say the word yes or in any way agree with what is offered. If you read enough here you will see that these spammers will lock you into a contract you never agreed to.

Always call Telus to discuss what you want, at least then you know you are talking to a Telus rep. Or ask here of course.

I am reading this post and will add a reply separately. I would like to know why I am able to Mark as Solution your post. Usually, at least I thought it was the OP in a thread that could mark a post as solution. But this explains several marked as solutions that had me scratching my head if anyone can mark a post as solved.

Should only be the OP that's allowed to do so. We'll look into it.

You're definitely right to be suspicious, as this does sound like a phishing / scam call. The fact that the caller had your details without you providing them is a common tactic used by fraudsters. They get info from various third-party leaks or public sources to gain trust. Being told to call back a specific, non-standard 778 number is another red flag. You did the right thing by proactively checking with us to confirm everything, and we always recommend checking in with us directly to confirm any interaction you may receive, and to never willingly share your private info to unknown or suspicious callers.
