Fail to Pair Telus Remote with Roku Plus Series TV

When pairing the "Telus TV Remote" with a Roku Plus Series  TV, the mute and volume buttons work, but when I accept the code (any of 3) and continue (complete), then the buttons no longer work. Oddly the Power button does work.

Process:

  • Settings > Device settings > Remotes & Accessories > Program Remote with TV
  • Search for Roku TV, and select
  • Press Mute and Volume up/Down (they work)
  • Select "Yes, Finish" (volume still works)
  • Select "Continue" (now back to Remotes & Accessories)
  • Now the Mute and Volume buttons no longer work. Only the Power button works.

It is as if the remote failed to store (save) the code.

    The issue where volume and mute buttons stop working on your remote after pairing with a Roku TV is typically caused by a saved profile conflict between Infrared (IR) volume codes and HDMI-CEC control settings. You can resolve this issue by enabling HDMI-CEC on your Roku TV or resetting and manually re-pairing the IR code memory on your TELUS remote.

     

    Because the TELUS TV Digital Box uses HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) alongside IR blasters, turning on CEC allows the remote to control TV volume directly through the HDMI connection:

     

    Using your original Roku TV remote, navigate to Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC).

    Check/enable System audio control and 1-touch play.

    Restart your Roku TV by going to Settings > System > Power > System restart.

     

    If the remote is failing to store the IR code during the on-screen wizard, resetting the remote's local memory should clear the corrupted pairing data:

     

    Unpair Remote: On your TELUS TV home screen, navigate to Settings > Device settings > Remotes & Accessories > TELUS Remote and select Unpair.

    Factory Reset Remote: Press and hold the 1 and 9 buttons simultaneously for 4 seconds until the light turns green. Press OK (the light will flash green twice to confirm memory reset).

    Re-pair with Digital Box: Press and hold the 7 and 9 buttons together for 3 seconds until the light flashes green twice to re-pair Bluetooth with your TELUS TV Digital Box.

     

    Then you can try reprogramming the remote with your Roku TV.

     

    On your TELUS TV home screen, go to Settings > Device settings > Remotes & Accessories > Program Remote with TV.

    Select Roku TV.

    During the test phase, test volume up/down. If Code 1 drops after completing the wizard, select No, try next code to force the box to store Code 2 or Code 3.

    Tip: If standard Roku TV codes fail to save volume controls, select TCL or Insignia as the TV brand during setup, as many Roku Plus Series TV panels share IR code bases with these manufacturers.

     

    Lastly, If you're using the physical TELUS Slimline II remote connected to an Optik TV box, you can bypass the Android TV wizard and store the code directly into the remote's hardware memory:

     

    Turn on your Roku TV.

    Press and hold the OPTIONS button on your TELUS remote for 3 seconds until the green light flashes twice.

    Enter code 0029 (or 0007 for Power/Volume sync). The green light will flash twice.

    Press and hold the TV Power button until your Roku TV switches off, then release immediately and press OK to save.
