Windows live 2012

Hello,

I have been using Windows live 2012 to access my emails for years now and since yesterday it is blocking me from accessing my emails saying my name and password is incorrect. It is doing this on all our computers in my home including my wife's and son's laptop. I have a lot of important saved drafts that I can't even forward to another email account . Can someone tell me what is going on.

  • Additionally, the other reason I suggested getting a modern email program is that Windows Live Mail 2012 doesn't support modern encryption and Google will eventually block outdated mail apps. If the above mentioned email settings don't work, you may have to change the security options on the Telus email through a browser. That may give a temporary reprieve.

Even though it is not recommended, and will only be temporary, to enable Less Secure app access, log in through a browser and:

    1. Click on the user icon in the top right and then click on Manage your Google Account:
    2. Click on Security on the left menu
    3. Click on Less secure app access
    4. Click on the toggle to enable:
    5. As long as the mail server settings match what is in my above post, re-try Windows Live Mail and see if it works now.
  • I'll try to get this right. You need to fist login to your telus account via a web browser. Then go to this link for your security settings:

    Security

From there you will need to enable 2-Step Verification if it's not already enabled.

Once that's done you can then go to App Passwords at the bottom of the 2-Step Verification page and create one for the App that you are setting up (Outlook, Windows Live, etc. it's just a label to keep track of your App Passwords). Select Create and a password will be generated. Copy or write this down (including spaces) as there is no way that I know to view this password except when it's first generated.

This will be the password you use in your Account configuration in the Mail app that you are using.

    Hopefully that's it.

  • Running Win10 here, until work software I need won't run on it anymore ğŸ˜€.  Unlike most people, I don't care about security updates.  I was running Win7 up until a year or two ago, with no security compromises, and only installed patches dated up until 2012 (I think that was the latest I installed).  I wouldn't recommend this for most people, though.

I've never needed the full Outlook, so never used it.  And until I installed Win10, I was using Winmail, which I prefer over Livemail.  I tried installing Winmail on Win10, using the tutorial on EightForums (or one of those forums), but I couldn't get it to work.  I actually almost switched to (and older version of) Thunderbird, but luckily found this thread!

  • outlook express, that was a great working program. It seems current newer and better is going the same way as OE. I went from OE to outlook and skipped Livemail.

Is it change for the sake of change? Windows 10 is ending this year, as are the many computers that cannot use windows 11. Maybe of interest I fire up an old windows 98SE once in a while to run software of that vintage. When 98SE was being phased out it resembles what is happening with win 10. I rolled back the updates near the end then and will do the same with win 10, prevent updates and have working win 10 computer.

  • Thanks to everyone, especially to FuzzyLogic.  I had the same problem:  Livemail abruptly stopped working with a user/password error.  It would have been nice if Google or Telus gave us a heads-up.

It seems this "two-factor + app password" has replaced the "less secure app" option, since that setting has disappeared after setting up 2fa+app-pw.

Yes, I'm still using Livemail because I prefer it over other email clients.  Thunderbird would be okay if it weren't such a RAM-hog.  I'm not against updating, but it seems like each Microsoft email client gets worse and worse.  If I could still use Outlook Express, I would ğŸ˜€.

  • I thought windows live a Microsoft product was retired after windows 8.

Windows Live was retired when Windows 8 came out. Support / updates for Live was completely ended January 2017.

If it's a Telus email, you will need to check your settings. Google, which is the email service provider for Telus email accounts, is actively blocking apps configured to authenticate with username and password alone. Two of the possible errors it will give is an incorrect username or an incorrect password. If using IMAP, any drafts should be saved to the server itself. You can check by going to https://email.telus.net in a browser and logging in. As Windows Live Mail was discontinued in January 2017, it is definitely recommended to get a modern email program. Thunderbird for example.

Make sure your settings in WLM2012 match the below ones.

    (From https://www.telus.com/en/support/article/telus-email-as-alternative-application)

or if using POP3 currently in WLM2012 (don't use these if using IMAP):

Thank you for all the very useful info. I already have 2 other email accounts with Outlook and Gmail. I really like the look and layout of Windows live 2012.On one Gmail account I see Less secure app access and it is set to ON but I don't even see Less secure app access anywhere on my other Gmail account I use for browsing.
