The system has never been activated? What does that mean? $50 monthly should be for monitoring when activated. If she never turns it on then opening the door will not sound the alarm or warning. There is a setting for sound etc.
The question is since you are speaking for her, do you know how to operate it? Time to ask for an onsite tech to instruct. I can only advise myself on how to cancel the service.
