In my experience, Canadian prepaid phone plans do not work in the USA. Depending on your phone, you may be able to use WiFi for some communications, but SMS is unlikely to work.
You could pick up a cheap phone while in the states, or get a Roam Mobility SIM, however, you would have a different phone number, and need to tell those with whom you communicate of the change.

Where are you going in the US?
- US prepaid phones do NOT allow you to text to Canadian Numbers
- Roam Mobility is the best option for US and Canada communications, however Roam does not work in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming or Jellystone. Also Canadians texting to your US Roam Mobility number will incur charges
- consider email or a messaging service like BBM to minimize international texting surcharges.

What kind of phone do you have?
I'd also suggest looking into getting it unlocked.
