Internet IP address

I recently had 1.5GB Fiber installed and my my IP address is indicating that I am located in Vancouver BC even though I am in the Toronto area.

This is messing up the regional restrictions on some of my streaming services that I use and have no idea how to have my IP address accurately show my location.

Does TELUS just have built in VPN or something that i wasn't told about? haven't had this issue with any other provides.

IP addresses are assigned dynamically across the network. Sometimes, these addresses may be registered to a different location than where they're actually used.

Static IP addresses are available to business accounts, though.

You can try restarting your router via unplug/replug to see if it registers a new IP address. If you're technically comfortable doing it yourself, there are online resources that walk you through how to release and renew your IP address via Command Prompt for Windows or Terminal for MacOS.

Those tools will only affect your computer's IP address on your LAN, not the modem's WAN address -- unless there are options I'm not aware of (quite possible).

If you do a release/renew cycle using the modem's release/renew button, you are almost guaranteed to end up with the same IP address (in my experience). You need to release the address and wait some (usually substantial) period before renewing to get a different address.

The easiest way to do this is to turn off the modem and wait for the lease to expire. Unfortunately, in my area, they use a 4-hour lease period so you need to leave it off for at least this long to have the best chance of getting a new IP.

If your modem offers a method to release the address without automatically renewing it, then that is a better route. The T3200M modems don't offer this.
