Optik TV Basics still requires a TELUS TV digital box for $10/month plus and internet connection for an additional $60 - 80/month minimum and is not available for streaming on devices such as mobile phones, tablets or PC's. So over $100/month for a handful of basic channels than I can stream for free over my 5G internet connection on my devices or over a digital antenna that has a one-time cost of under $100. No thanks. I'm already paying for internet in my mobility account.
Telus must have heard me as only a couple hours after posting my rant I received an email offering a brand new service, Stream+, which combines Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime together with TELUS TV+ in one package, streamed over your mobile devices for an additional $23/month. This is what I've been waiting for! Thank you Telus for joining the streaming world!
I also wanted to say, even if you are planning on watching a lot of content on Netflix or other streaming services... do you have enough data on your phone to do that? I use 1TB a month (over 1000 gb) just in streaming. If you're planning on streaming a lot you should just get the telus internet/optik tv bundle otherwise you'll eat through your data like crazy unless you only plan on streaming at the lowest quality and only watching a few hours a month.
I have access to free WiFi much of the time so I don't need to purchase much data. My average combined data usage for home and cell including high quality streaming is less than 200 GB. I did a trial a few months back... I pulled the plug on my home internet for a whole month and used my cell as a wireless WiFi modem for my office and entertainment centre PC's to see how well it worked over the 5G connection. It was way better than my wired internet connection. I bought a $70 GE digital antenna that picks up all the major Canadian and US TV networks for free (in return for having to watch commercials of course) in crystal clear audio and video. Telus wants over $100 every month including internet connection just to give you these same basic commercial channels? No thanks, that's what I call gouging. But it's not about the money, I can't support a company who treats its long-term customers as badly as Telus does. I'm keeping my Telus Mobility account for now as their cellular division has been relatively fair to deal with, but I may end up changing cell providers as well in the future.
I have been a continuous customer of Telus since the merger with BC Tel in the 1990s, and I've never missed a monthly payment. I've seen their customer service level drop off a cliff and their simultaneous gouging of long term customers skyrocket these last few years, especially since the inauguration of their latest CEO. The last straw that made me decide to cancel my home internet, home telephone line and Optik TV service... I received a threatening demand letter from Telus in the spring saying that they were going to cut off my wired home internet service unless I upgraded to Fibre Optic. OK, Byeeeee
To be fair I don't even know why you bother having any Telus services as you seem to hate them so much. The reason you received a 'demand letter' is because they were changing out the obsolete copper infrastructure, and no longer want to DSL, and to be honest who the heck would want to have DSL when fibre is available anyways... makes no sense. If you think Telus customer services is bed.... you clearly have never had the displeasure of dealing with Bell.
