Depending on the phone, there should be a button to turn off the built-in answering machine on the main base station for the phones.

Community Power UserWhen you say built in phone system, are you referring to an answering machine or the voicemail system itself but it's just a prompt asking for a mailbox number?
- It is a built in system with an automated basic message.On our Panasonic set of cordless phones.It does take the message but we don't want to use it.
