Roaming charges while on vacation?

I was recently on vacation (cruise) and I have an EasyRoam charge appearing on my account during one of the days I was away ($16.00).

Some points:

  1. I have an iPhone
  2. I did have cellular turned on (to be reachable during emergencies)
  3. Data roaming was OFF
  4. I did not make any calls on this days, including voicemail.
  5. In my phone app, in call history, there is no record of outgoing calls.
  6. I did see a few incoming calls, but I promptly declined them (using my Apple Watch)
  7. I did not send any outgoing texts (iMessage or SMS). There are no outgoing or incoming texts on that particular day.

I'm wondering what else might have triggered this charge? Thanks!

  • I have also had this issue - I had my data roaming off but kept cellular on in case of an incoming text message (which they say shouldn't be charged for). However when I came back, I had several days charges for roaming, despite not taking a call or sending a text. When I called, the person on the phone told me that app notifications were what caused the charges. A simple push notification from Sephora that popped up cost me $16. I have no idea how these are not blocked when data roaming is turned off, but they aren't.

I’ll guess (and it’s just a guess) that #6 is the culprit.
