Why does the yellow and green lights on either side of cable from modem flash (very brightly) 24/7, whether the box is on or not. The link light is always on as well. Everything works, but since the box is in a room where people sleep it is very disturbing. It there any way to stop it without unplugging modem cable?

There's no way to turn the status lights off on this particular router. Your only remedy is to cover them with black electrical tape or something similar.
I can see why Telus wouldn't want the ability to turn them off. It's important information to have when trying to diagnose an issue over the phone. If all the status lights are off it means the router is dead or has no power. Having the third possibility that a setting turned them off just complicates things.
