Below are few tips that we thought would be valuable for keeping your cellular usage in control.

Disable background app refresh

By disabling background app refresh, the app will only access data when they are actively used.

To access Background App Refresh:

To disable, go to:

  1. Settings
  2. General
  3. Background App Refresh

Control access to cellular data

This function helps ensure that apps of your choice operate over WiFi only.

To access the controls, go to:

  1. Settings
  2. Cellular
  3. Scroll down to the “Use Cellular Data For” section
  4. Individually toggle ON/OFF for each app

Apps with video and music streaming functionality tend to consume more data, examples are YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, and Spotify.

Optimize iCloud sync setting

There are two components to iCloud: iCloud Drive and iCloud sync.

iCloud Drive allows your apps to store documents and data in iCloud. An option is available to turn off its use of cellular data.

To optimize, go to:

  1. Settings
  2. iCloud
  3. iCloud Drive
  4. Scroll to the bottom and turn “Use Cellular Data off”

iCloud sync works with Apple apps, such as Contacts, Calendar, and Notes. When enabled, changes are communicated over cellular data and Wi-Fi and will reflect all your Apple devices.

Navigate to:

  1. Settings
  2. iCloud
  3. On this page, you will see a list of apps. Turn off the ones you do not wish to have access to cellular data.
