Local DNS resolution does not appear to work on my Telus Wifi Hub, firmware v3.00.20 build80.
I've set Domain Name to "lan", and DNS Server to the router's lan address of 192.168.1.1. I have another computer for which the hub has a hostname of "oct", as shown on the Lan DHCP page. However, nslookup oct.lan 192.168.1.1 gives NXDOMAIN. Same deal with nslookup oct 192.168.1.1.
Should this work? Failing that, is there a way to disable DHCP on this device and use my own server?

Yeah, noticed the same here. Kind of annoying. I'm trying to avoid having to bridge my own router in, but running into various little issues like this.
