Re: Connect to my Mac from outside my lan
Telus doesn't support (residential) port forwarding, but it is still technically possible on the Arcadyan Wifi Hub (white trash can) to open up the port for remote desktop (via admin setting of the hub under Network --> Firewall --> Port Forwarding). As you suggest, that isn't the most secure, though if you are using Remote Desktop and not just a VNC connection the connection should still be encrypted but only as strong as compromised login credentials or a poor password. It takes some fiddling (and cost) to set up a VPN, but it's doable. I've used a Raspberry Pi as a server that is connected directly to the hub via ethernet. Set up an account for free dynamic DNS through one of the supported providers listed under Network --> Dynamic DNS and enter your credentials. Then use PiVPN.io to set up a Wireguard VPN on the Raspberry Pi. Use port forwarding from above to open up a port and direct to IP address of the VPN server . Once you've tunnelled in through the VPN, you can safely remote into your Mac. Those are obviously abbreviated instructions, but one way of tackling it.6.1KViews1like1CommentRe: Wifi Hub - Port Forwarding No Longer Working
UPnP doesn't seem to matter. I've done a hard power down of the hub and each of the boosters and still no luck. I even assigned a DHCP reservation for the offending wifi boost unit, and the hub still wants to reassign any port forwarding rule to that booster - no matter what its IP address is. I guess complete factory reset of the hub and the 2 boost units is probably next course of action.5.2KViews0likes0CommentsWifi Hub - Port Forwarding No Longer Working
I've been helping out my son to host a Minecraft server for him and his buddies, and everything was working fine for the past 8 months, up until the last week or so. Any port forwarding rule on the Telus wifi hub (Network > Firewall > Port Forwarding) now reassigns itself to a seemingly random IP address. I can reset the rule to the correct IP address (the server with a DCHP reservation) and the port is opened for around 1 minute (verified by being able to log on the server externally and through CanYouSeeMe.org), after which it closes and the rule reverts back to the same random private IP address. Is this a new 'feature' that Telus has recently implemented?Solved5.3KViews0likes4Comments
