Re: Internet IP address
If you do a release/renew cycle using the modem's release/renew button, you are almost guaranteed to end up with the same IP address (in my experience). You need to release the address and wait some (usually substantial) period before renewing to get a different address. The easiest way to do this is to turn off the modem and wait for the lease to expire. Unfortunately, in my area, they use a 4-hour lease period so you need to leave it off for at least this long to have the best chance of getting a new IP. If your modem offers a method to release the address without automatically renewing it, then that is a better route. The T3200M modems don't offer this.1.3KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Optik TV Added After Suspicious Call; Legit?
I just received a text from 777222 saying that they want to upgrade my modem. The link in the text that is supposed to take me to a "why?" page doesn't -- big surprise -- so I replied to the text with the suggested SUPPORT option. They then replied that today wasn't available and asked for a new day. They contacted ME and now want to force me to accommodate THEM to get an answer about the legitimacy of their screwed-up text. That ain't happening. The modem is working fine for me and if they wat to replace it, they can do the jumping through hoops to get it done. I am so fed up with this company.25KViews0likes1CommentRe: How do you judge a telecommunication business that you can't communicate with?
I know what I think of them. After numerous problems with Telus over the last year, I told them flatly "No contract" when they started calling me near the end of my contract. They continued to call and I continued to ignore them until I finally decided to answer them. I told the (probably overseas) telemarketer that under no circumstances would I enter another contract with Telus. I was then passed on to their customer retention department where I told a bored-sounding guy that I was investigating options and would not enter another contract with Telus. He then offered me a deal -- with a 2-year contract. I again said "No contracts" and he offered a very unfavourable "deal" with a 1-year contract. When I again said "No contract", he said that was the best he could do. I've been a Telus customer for over 40 years and I know that these people have the authority to offer deals without contracts as I've had one previously, so this was the final straw with Telus. I expect to switch to Starlink sometime soon. More money, but much better service (I've heard).3.6KViews0likes1CommentRe: Gmail Migration - New Support Content
psl I haven't used Telus for email for over a decade, ever since you stopped handling it yourselves and outsourced it to some pathetically incompetent 3rd party. I currently use Gmail for my personal email, but I'm far from happy with it. So, if I decide to activate a Telus/Google account: - Will Google still be rummaging through my emails looking for data to add to their database? Your video claims that agreeing to Google's terms is "just a technicality", but I understand enough law to seriously doubt that statement. - Will I still be subject to Google's truly annoying security algorithms that lock you out of your account if *they* decide your activity is suspicious? And send security "warnings" every time your IP address changes (hello, DHCP????) - Will I be required to give them my phone number? I know you said "No" previously, but later posts suggest that this is not the case. - Will you offer some kind of 2FA that *doesn't* rely on using text messaging which is useless in places with no/poor cell coverage (depressingly common in Canada) and is *known* to be easily spoofed? Something like Yubikey, for instance?21KViews1like1CommentAnyone tried/succeeded in using 'curl' to login to Actiontec t3200m?
I want to be able to download the statistics from the router, but the t3200m requires admin login to do this (why?). I've tried using 'wget' but without success. It appears that 'curl' is the "go to" tool for doing this kind of thing, but it also appears to have a steep learning curve. As I just want my stats, becoming a 'curl' expert is not something I really want to do. Has anyone done this? Or tried and been defeated? Any advice is appreciated. Thx.1.7KViews0likes0CommentsDoes anyone know any details about Telus cancelling web space?
I've been a Telus Internet customer since they first offered DSL. During that time, they've dropped newsgroups, migrated to a near-useless email service, switched to Gmail, and now they've cancelled web space -- all without compensation and for the web space, with NO NOTICE. To say that I'm furious is an understatement. That web space was serving the page for my business and I have no idea how long it's been down. It's been just a holding page since I've retired, but that's not the point. Had I been relying on it, I'd have been in trouble. They have posted a phone number to get info, but I know that if I call it I'll go ballistic on them and get cut off. Anyone have any details?2.5KViews0likes1CommentRe: Is your crappy Telus Email service exceptionally crappy again?
I've been using Telus ADSL since they first offered it in the 90's and the one thing I've learned is that none of their servers should be relied on to work properly or reliably. I run all necessary services (DNS, NTP, email, etc) from other external services. It simply is not worth the headache to rely on Telus.5.7KViews0likes0Comments
