PikTV Frustrations

Jason_B

I have Telus fibre in Edmonton and switched from Optik to Pik as the increasing price for Optik is just too much.  I really hoped PikTV would meet my needs, but it is brutally frustrating; is anything going to be done to stabilize this service or after >10 years as a Telus customer do I have to go to Shaw?

The PikTV box needs a full restart everytime I use it.  Occasionally it loses sound.  Yesterday it seemed to be working well and halfway through a movie it crashes.  I restart, no network.  The PikTV app will not work but Netflix on the box does.

PikTV on a non-Telus android box is brutal; it does not read the remote properly and scrolling or moving around the interface is impossible.  If I do manage to get a channel selected, it times out every hour or so saying I have to be on a Telus network to use it.

PikTV on my web browser (Win 10) is also terrible; it times out the same as the android box version saying I need to be on a Telus network.

Why is this service so bad?

I would call TELUS support . They can release and reset up your PIK account. They will also give you some assistance in resetting your Android box. As BC has pointed out you can only use the TELUS box not an Android box.

PIK is a low cost cord cutter solution. You might be better off with a skinny package on OPTIK.

The PikTV Android TV App is not installable on other Android hardware. Trying to side load the phone App causes the issues you see.

I haven't experienced the issues you describe. Can you fully outline your setup?  If you have the Telus PikTV device, it should be connected to your network to authenticate your account.

I use (or try to) PikTV in 3 locations as mentioned. Telus fibre.  180/180 speed.

Telus PikTV box; incredibly slow, occasional sound loss, each time I go to use (only every couple of days), it is stuck, black tv.  I have to unplug it.  Right now it is not working at all so based on other posts I suspect it needs a factory reset; Netflix is still working on it.  This box is plugged into ethernet.

In my office I use a ZoomTak android box on a tv there.  I did not sideload; but it must be a phone focused app so nearly unusable.

On my computer, latest updates and Windows 10, I get the timeout about not being on a Telus network every hour or so and I have to relogin.  Chrome browser.

I work in IT in a senior technical position so am very experienced with networks and IT systems, and manage several corporate connections with Telus across the country.  This service is bad.  When will it be fixed?

Hi @Jason_B,

I've used Pin on both the Telus Android box and Apple TV and FWIW it's way more stable than the Pik app was/is on my Telus Pik Android box.

I know that's not an option or desire for some people, but it kinda points to issues with the Telus hardware and/or Android TV, rather than the "back-end"

Anyone else out there got recent Android box vs Apple TV quality of service experience?
